My feeling about cancel culture is that people are barking up the wrong tree. It seems to me that we are seeing all of these cases of people being fired from universities and newspapers etc for stupid stuff because universities are so commercialised more than anything else.
It's completely believable that there is this huge generation gap and people over 40 who make up a lot of the staff are just unable to understand the young people and their concerns. But twas ever thus. What seems to be different to me is that there is no authority because people are generally poorer.
These people like Bari Weiss, Ayan Arsi Ali, I noticed that you were too smart to say Jordan Peterson lol. they are all very quick to become the martyrs. Just like the kids claiming to be oppressed at the first opportunity, these guys resign from their nice jobs because they feel bullied, and try to make their persecution complex a social issue. They also seem to make a lot of money talking about how we should care about them, there is a huge audience for this grievance culture just like the other one.
It really is post modernism par excellence, these apparently serious people are very serious about being serious, on both sides they spend so much energy and often have considerable success writing about how they are not allowed to write, and this concern about the 'illiberal trend' has been mainstream for more than 5 years, that was one of the big thing that people were using to explain Donald Trump winning the election in 2016, and 5 years later, it's still all of these chicken littles repeating the idea that the sky is falling. It's like how Alex Jones still says we are all about to be enslaved even though he's been saying it since the 90s.
It's like Waiting for Godot, just repeat, repeat, repeat, in shabbier and shabbier clothes, with no memory of what the fight was about, just a grievance
